Lionel Messi experienced an emotional evening as he played what he confirmed to be his last official international match in Argentina. The 38-year-old star also left fans wondering about his future participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with his post-match remarks.

Argentina hosted Venezuela at the Monumental Stadium in a South American World Cup qualifier and secured a convincing 3-0 win. Already qualified for the tournament, Argentina moved up to 38 points, with goals coming from Messi in the 39th and 80th minutes, and Lautaro Martínez in the 76th.

While Messi once again stole the spotlight with a brace, the match held a deeper significance—it marked his final competitive international appearance in front of his home fans. The legendary forward was visibly emotional, particularly during the warm-up, when chants in his honor brought tears to his eyes. He shared the pre-match ceremony with his children, making the occasion even more special.

Speaking to the Argentine media in the stadium corridors after the match, Messi addressed the uncertainty over his presence at the 2026 World Cup:

"Right after the 2022 World Cup I said I didn’t think I would play in the next one. At my age, it’s logical to believe that I won’t. But here we are—I feel excited and motivated. I take every day and every match as they come. It doesn’t seem impossible. Back then I said that, logically, at 39 years old I probably wouldn’t be at a World Cup. There are still nine months to go, which is a long time in football. The most important thing is to enjoy each moment and try to stay happy. Luckily, I’ve been able to play three straight matches, which matters a lot. What is clear is that today was my last official game at home for points. When I feel good, I enjoy being out there; when I don’t, it’s tough, and I don’t want to be on the pitch."

When asked if this meant he hadn’t yet decided about the World Cup, Messi replied:

"Not exactly. What I meant is that we’re taking it game by game. Nine months is long, even if it passes quickly. We finish this season at the end of the year, and then I’ll have preseason with my club. I’ll see how I feel. Hopefully, we finish this MLS campaign well, fight for the championship, and then we’ll see. I want to arrive in good shape and enjoy what’s ahead."
